Ometepe is situated in the Great Lake of Nicaragua. The Spanish conquerors called this lake the fresh water sea because of the enormous size. The name Ometepe is derived from the nahuti words “ome” which means two and “Tepeti” which means mountain or hill. The size of the island is 276 square kilometers and it is formed out of two giant volcanoes. One still active and one inactive. Ometepe is renowned by international and local tourists for its hospitality, level of security, nature, overwhelming landscapes, the volcanoes, beaches and archeological artifacts. Furthermore, the island is a natural biosphere with many natural reserves and forests where you can find a unique and high biodiversity.

Since its existence the island represents a paradise. Stories of historians tell that indigenous tribes found the island in a search for a place prophesied by one of their gods. From that day on the island transformed into a sanctuary inhabited by a various tribes and cultures. Today we can see the proof of this in the many petroglyphs, statues and ceramics around the island.

Nowadays the island is inhabited by one of the most friendly people in Nicaragua. The locals live from fishing and agriculture. Over the last years the tourism has started on Ometepe and therefore the island houses a lot of accomodations, food , tours that make it possible for tourists to visit this little paradise.
